1. Introduction
The best boilies for carp fishing have always been those crafted from animal proteins due to their excellent digestibility and amino acid profile.
In recent years, insect proteins have made their way into the most innovative aquaculture farms, with the goal of further improving nutritional balance and contributing to environmental conservation by reducing pressure on marine reserves.
With the exceptional enthusiasm shown by fish for these high-quality protein sources, we have decided to create a complete range of boilies centered around the signature ingredient, insect protein.
In this article, we will provide you with a detailed introduction to this range and explain why we are confident that insects will become the leading ingredient in carp fishing baits in the years to come.
2. What Are BNV Boilies?
Over the years, boilies have evolved towards increasingly high-quality nutritional profiles. From their appearance in the 1970s with profiles rich in milk-based proteins but harmful to carp, to the "crap baits" of the 1980s, which were boilies made from plant flours devoid of any nutritional value, the "boilie" has undergone a transformation. In the early 2000s, it was reinvented with the introduction of HNV boilies, standing for High Nutritional Value.
These boilies, crafted from animal flours, quickly became the best baits on the market for carp fishing. Animal flours, especially those from fish, are rich in high-quality proteins and easily digestible due to their amino acid and fatty acid profiles. As a result, these baits provide a solid long-term nutritional foundation for carp.
However, the ecological impact of these flours has been a concern. To produce them, millions of tons of fish and other marine species are caught each year. Furthermore, the processing of these flours is highly energy-intensive.
Recognizing this issue, extensive research has been conducted to find a credible alternative. Some cutting-edge aquaculture farms have explored the possibility of using insects as a sustainable source of protein.
3. BNV Boilies Made from Insect Proteins
3.1 Insect Proteins for Aquaculture
An increasing number of scientific publications are highlighting the vast potential and benefits of insect proteins as a replacement for animal-based flours. Insect proteins offer a promising alternative to these environmentally problematic fish flours.
Insects such as black soldier flies, mealworms, and crickets are naturally rich in high-quality proteins, containing all essential amino acids required for fish growth. Furthermore, their production is more eco-friendly and resource-efficient.
Raising insects requires less water, food, and space compared to traditional livestock or fish farming used for animal flours. Additionally, insects can be raised using organic waste, reducing the strain on agricultural resources. Unlike animal flours, insect production generates minimal waste and emits only a small amount of greenhouse gases, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.
Insect proteins are easily digestible for fish, promoting their growth and overall health. The increasing use of insect proteins in fish feed marks a significant shift in how we approach food production. Not only does it offer a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution, but it also helps preserve wild fish stocks and encourages responsible aquaculture.
The future of fish nutrition appears to be heading toward a more balanced path, where insect proteins will play an increasingly vital role.
3.2 Boilies Enter a New Era with Insect Proteins
The benefits in terms of sustainability and nutrition are just some of the reasons why insect proteins are generating so much excitement among researchers and breeders.
As this technology continues to advance, we are likely to witness a radical transformation of the fish feed industry, with enduring benefits for our planet and our food supply.
Extensive review of numerous scientific studies published in leading international journals has convinced us of the value of insect proteins in crafting higher-quality boilies for carp fishing. Given the exceptional nutritional profile of insect proteins, incorporating them into our formulations became a clear choice.
Building upon this realization, we made the decision to develop an entire range of products not only crafted with insects but also centered around them. It was an exhilarating challenge that took two years of dedicated work to create a range that was not only optimal but also aligned with our expectations as carp anglers.
The initial results were truly indicative of this wise choice. Carp, as omnivorous creatures with a carnivorous inclination, continually feed on insects and small invertebrates. It was evident that a well-crafted range of boilies centered around insects would prove effective.
4. Our Insect-ß™ Boilies Range
4.1 A Common Insect Foundation for Our Three Boilie Formulas
The Insect-ß™ boilies range comprises three distinct boilies, all built upon a common foundation. We envisioned the use of insects in two complementary forms.
4.1.1 Black Fly Soldier Protein
The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is an insect species that is increasingly being raised for larval flour production. These insects are non-harmful and feed on decomposing organic matter, making them natural cleansers. They are easy to rear and have a short life cycle, allowing for rapid larval production.
Black Soldier Fly larval flour is remarkable for its nutritional composition. It is rich in high-quality proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Compared to other animal protein sources, it contains fewer saturated fats and is free from antibiotics and growth hormones, making it a healthier option for animal feed.
One of the reasons Black Soldier Fly larval flour is gaining popularity is its low environmental impact. Raising these insects requires less water, space, and food resources compared to the farming of many other animal species. Additionally, they contribute to reducing organic waste by recycling it, which can help address the growing issue of food waste.
Black Soldier Fly larval flour is increasingly used as an ingredient in animal feed. It can be incorporated into fish, poultry, pork, and even pet foods. It enhances the nutritional value of the feed and promotes the growth and health of animals.
Black Soldier Fly larvae have demonstrated natural resistance to certain diseases, which can reduce the need for veterinary medicines in the livestock industry. This can contribute to reducing drug residues in animal products and creating a healthier environment.
4.1.2 The Market's Best "Insect Birdfood"
In addition to our insect protein, we've chosen to incorporate the market's finest birdfood, made with over 50% insects and small invertebrates like daphnia and gammarus, which carp absolutely adore.
These birdfood blends, in addition to their richness in insect proteins, also contain vegetable fats, biscuit flour, honey, and are fortified with minerals and vitamins.
As an ingredient for boilie production, this insect birdfood is truly exceptional, primarily due to its nutritional composition but also because of its particle size, which allows for the boilie to open up and accelerate the release of attractants.
Therefore, in our boilies, you'll discover whole pieces of invertebrates that provide the ideal texture for our range.
4.2 A Range of Boilies with Distinctive Features
In order to differentiate our boilies and tailor them to every fishing scenario carp anglers encounter throughout the year, we've adapted our three formulas by incorporating some of the finest ingredients and attractants available for carp fishing into our insect-based foundation. This subtle fusion makes our boilies truly unique in the market.
4.2.1 The Insect-ß BloodLiver Boilie
Constructed like all our boilies from our insect protein and insect birdfood, we've introduced chicken liver protein into this formula.
Carp enthusiasts are well aware that chicken liver is one of, if not the most effective attractant to add to a boilie recipe. Countless record-breaking carp have been caught using this additive.
Our liver flour brings both nutritional value and a distinct yet gentle aroma of poultry liver. To complete the balance, we've incorporated pre-digested fish meal, highly soluble, which enhances the already significant attractiveness of this boilie. Although we predominantly substitute fish flours with our insect proteins, we selectively use the finest fish proteins to enhance both the boilie's equilibrium and its allure.
The BloodLiver is a reinterpretation of liver-based boilies that sets itself apart from the numerous others on the market, thanks to our signature ingredient: insects.
Lastly, as in all our formulas, we've included the attractant that has long been a well-kept secret: N-butyric acid. While we understand it won't perform miracles, it does provide an appreciated extra that often makes a difference in the most challenging fishing situations.
All our boilies formulas also contain significant additions of natural liquids. At rod oliver, we are avid proponents of these liquids. They not only provide extra nutrients but also enhance bait solubility and accelerate the diffusion of all attractants.
For the BloodLiver, we've chosen bloodworm liquid, a highly concentrated hydrolysate of mosquito larvae, well-known for being a top-class additive. It partly lends its name to the boilie, reflecting its effectiveness. Additionally, to accentuate the liver's presence, we've incorporated a generous quantity of liver liquid, which on its own could justify the performance of this bait.
For those who regularly fish with liver-based boilies, the BloodLiver offers both their favorite ingredient (liver) and a significant difference (insects) that sets them apart from other carp anglers. Finally, for those interested in trying liver-based boilies for the first time, rest assured you have in your hands one of the most original, refined, and balanced versions available on the market.
4.2.2 The Insect-ß MapleNuts Boilie
The MapleNuts boilie brings a soft and creamy dimension to our insect proteins with the addition of a timeless and well-recognized ingredient in the world of carp fishing: tiger nut flour. Tiger nut flour is notorious for carp fishing, and we couldn't afford to overlook it.
In this boilie, you'll find a substantial amount of fermented corn liquid, the renowned Corn Steep Liquid (CSL), which is undoubtedly the one we would keep if we had to choose just one. CSL is a pure attractant that never fails, regardless of the season, water type, or weather conditions; it's the most versatile natural liquid of all.
To enhance the sweetness of this boilie, we've incorporated vanilla extract, imparting a subtle biscuit-like flavor. Finally, this boilie is the only one in our range to which we've added a flavor. We embarked on this journey because we managed to source a beautiful Maple flavor, both in composition and fragrance. It enhances the creamy taste of the boilie and will fully satisfy enthusiasts of this kind of bait.
We have high hopes for this boilie, as it has proven to be versatile in our tests, with a little extra appeal in both summer and winter. By creating MapleNuts, we've successfully transformed a meat-based boilie with its insect proteins into a subtle balance with the sweetness of vanilla, making it a genuine "creamy" bait thanks to tiger nut flour and the addition of our Maple flavor. Finally, like all our boilies, the small quantity of N-butyric acid it contains will do it no harm; quite the opposite!
4.2.3 The Insect-ß RedTuna Boilie
RedTuna is undoubtedly the most refined, as it was developed last, benefiting from all the experience gained during the testing of our two other boilies. Our goal was to set one of our baits apart by using what we consider the most effective fish meal, that of tuna. We selected very high-quality tuna meal, which we integrated into our recipe in perfect harmony with our black fly soldier meal and insect birdfood. This gives this bait a strong tuna meal imprint while retaining a subtle flavor. Like BloodLiver, RedTuna also includes pre-digested fish meals to improve solubility and attractant dispersion. This boilie's composition also places significant importance on natural liquids. We've significantly included a liquid tuna hydrolysate and aminol to enhance the amino acid profile, already well-provided by our insect proteins.
To perfect this boilie, we chose to add the famous Robin Red® from Haith’s, renowned as the most effective additive in the entire carp fishing industry. Of course, N-butyric acid is also present, and to top it off, you'll find black pepper extract, which perfectly complements Robin Red®.
RedTuna will undoubtedly be the ideal boilie for capturing very large carp during your spring and autumn sessions. We are confident it will leave indelible memories, even for the most experienced carp anglers.
